Reference Materials Production
LGC has been involved in the production of chemical reference materials
for over 10 years. During that time about 100 'single substance' and 80
matrix reference materials have been certified.
The single substance materials, which are primarily intended for calibrating
analytical instruments, include pesticides certified for purity, organic
compounds certified for melting point and UV, Visible and IR standards with
certified wavelength and absorbance values.
The matrix materials, which enable the accuracy of an entire analytical
procedure to be checked, include food products certified for proximates
and trace elements and environmental materials, such as soils, sediments
and waters, certified for organic and inorganic contaminants.
The materials are produced according to guidelines issued by the International
Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), such as ISO Guide 35 - The Certification
of Reference Materials. Reference values and uncertainties are assigned to the
materials using data obtained either from interlaboratory studies, or from the
application of specific analytical methods in one or two laboratories. For certain
materials, state-of-the-art primary methods are used. To complete the
characterisation of a material, homogeneity and stability assessments are also
carried out.
