Healthcare
The combination of modern separation methods with mass spectrometry has born fruit in the development of an independent method for the analysis of cholesterol in serum (to within 1% relative). Accurate cholesterol measurements are important not only for effective healthcare, but also for their economic impact on the health service. These new measurement systems, developed at LGC, will also provide improved reference materials to foster the sound use of measuring instruments in local health centres and hospitals. The most recent technology has been developed to monitor the blood of patients, for very low levels of the metals used in artificial hip and knee replacement cases. In this context, novel and direct analysis of whole blood was able to monitor the concentrations of the key metals (e.g. Cr, Co, Ni and Ti) used in the artificial joints.
