TRMU51-  Evaluating measurement uncertainty for chemical testing laboratories
 Date      3 February 2010, 2 days

The ability to estimate measurement uncertainty is now a requirement of testing laboratories accredited to ISO/IEC 17025. This course is in line with ISO principles and with the EURACHEM/CITAC guide "Quantifying Uncertainty in Analytical Measurement". The first day introduces the principles of evaluating uncertainty and the second day goes on to provide the tools for identifying uncertainties and using validation data. The lectures and workshops take delegates through the process of evaluating uncertainty . Completion of this course should provide sufficient training to enable analysts to carry out an uncertainty evaluation for their own laboratory methods.

What are the benefits?

This course will help you:

  • Give your clients confidence in your results
  • Determine the fitness for purpose of your results
  • Demonstrate compliance with regulatory limits and contract specifications
  • Make valid comparisons between results obtained at different times and places
  • Meet ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation requirements

Contents

The course will cover:

Day 1 – The Principles

  • An introduction to the concept of measurement uncertainty
  • Statistics for measurement uncertainty estimation
  • The basic principles of evaluating uncertainty
  • Converting to standard uncertainties and combining uncertainties
  • Quantifying uncertainty components
  • Evaluation of an uncertainty budget using spreadsheets
  • How to handle precision
  • Using and conveying uncertainty

Day 2 – The Practice

  • Using data from validation studies
  • Cause and effect analysis
  • Dealing with data from recovery estimations
  • Precision data from validation
  • Handling uncertainty for large concentration ranges

Who should attend?

The course is aimed at analytical chemists who have limited knowledge of measurement uncertainty and need to evaluate the measurement uncertainty of a range of analytical methods.
