National Reference Laboratory for added water in poultry

LGC was appointed UK National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for water in poultry in 2006 in accordance with Commission Regulation (EC) No 543/2008, as amended, laying down detailed rules for the application of Council Regulation (EC) No 1234/2007 as regards the marketing standards for poultry meat.

Council Regulation (EC) No. 1234/2007 and Commission Regulation (EC) No. 543/2008, as amended, prescribe minimum harmonised marketing standards to facilitate trade and to ensure EU consumers are provided with good quality fresh and frozen poultry meat produced to a common standard. Commission Regulation (EC) No. 543/2008 lays down four methods to be used to determine the water content of poultry meat:

Every year, each NRL is required to submit control results of the analysis of poultry for added water, performed in their country during the year, according to EC Poultry Marketing Regulations 1234/2007, using the method specified in Commission Regulation (EC) No.543/2008.

Since 19 June 2009, the requirement for NRLs to submit annual control data has changed from a voluntary basis to mandatory in accordance with Commission Regulation (EC) 508/2009, which amends Commission Regulation (EC) No 543/2008. We have been in discussions with Defra, the Competent Authority in this area, who intend to draft and issue guidance on the impact of the recent changes to legislation. In the mean time, it was agreed with Defra that control data for 2008 will be submitted in line with previous year’s submissions. Please find below, links to control data submissions between 2006 and 2009.
