The EU is nearing a final agreement on REACH, a landmark package
of legislation affecting an estimated 30,000 chemicals that will
have radical impacts on producers, importers and downstream use.
The European Parliament’s Second Reading of the proposals is set
for 10 October. Over the summer, the EU has also forged ahead with
adopting a Globally Harmonised System (GHS) of classification and
labelling for chemicals, intended to accompany REACH. In this
climate of challenge and change, we look forward to hearing the
latest news from regulatory contacts, and anticipate a lively
debate.
In the afternoon, LGC experts will give an update on scientific
progress aiming to underpin effective regulation. Chemical
fingerprinting techniques and the systematic naming of compounds
can help clarify issues over substance identity. Strategies for
tackling new sample types are needed under legislation on
electrical and electronic equipment (ROHS & WEEE
regulations).
The GC works with LGC to advise on analytical science as a
problem-solving tool for government and industry. This meeting is
an ideal opportunity for chemists, industry scientists and public
sector experts to share news and issues with GC staff, pooling
knowledge and reinvigorating the analytical networks that help
regulation meet its practical goals.
Please contact tina.hunt@lgc.co.uk if you would
like to attend and/or register a colleague’s interest. The meeting
will be held at LGC, The Heath, Runcorn - for directions click here

chemicals, pharmaceutical and materials testing facilities at LGC’s
Runcorn site.
