20-Oct-2008 - LGC to jointly host seminar on analytical implications of REACH

With REACH pre-registration under way, chemical companies need to establish chemical sameness. To find out more, come along to our free half-day seminar on 11 November 2008.

From 1 January 2009, when the list of pre-registered substances will be published under REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals), companies will have to work out which chemicals REACH regards as being the same. Sameness will trigger membership of a mandatory substance information exchange forum (SIEF).

This open event will focus on tackling the uncertainties over chemical substance identity that are likely to arise early in the new year as companies begin to form SIEFs.

The seminar will tackle questions such as: What evidence is required to establish sameness?, Which measurements can help establish sameness? and How do you know you are getting the best advice or correct data?

Dr Derek Craston, the Government Chemist and Director of LGC’s Research & Technology Division, will present on ’ Smoothing the path to implementation’ and Kevin Thurlow, LGC’s expert on chemical nomenclature will be giving a paper on ‘Naming and “saming" – guidance on correct nomenclature’. Alan Handley, Technical Support and Development Manager at LGC’s Runcorn laboratory, will also present a paper on ‘Measurement showcase – focus on techniques with potential for dispute resolution/arbitration’.

The event is being hosted by LGC, under its statutory Government Chemist role, together with Yorkshire Chemical Focus and Chemistry Innovation.

LGC has a respected track record in characterising industrial chemicals, and has supplied specialist support for REACH training projects in Poland and Bulgaria. LGC was also closely involved with the development of a pioneering postgraduate course in REACH management provided by the University of Hull.

The half-day event, which will be held on Tuesday 11 November at the Briar Court Hotel, Huddersfield, will run from 9.45 am to 1.15 pm, followed by lunch.

We invite everyone affected by REACH, whether from a regulatory or compliance background, to consider taking part. To register for this event, contact Bernadette Francis via email: Bernadette.francis@lgc.co.uk or Tel: 020 8943 7423.
