– LGC welcomes Dr Derek
Craston to its
Board
Dr Derek Craston, Government Chemist and
Managing Director, LGC Science & Technology joins LGC Board as
Chief Scientific Officer
LGC, the international
science-based company and recognised leader in chemical and
bioanalytical services and reference materials, has welcomed
Dr Derek Craston onto its board as Chief
Scientific Officer. He will continue with his existing roles as
Government Chemist and Managing
Director of LGC Science &
Technology.
Dr Craston’s
responsibilities as CSO will include leading the scientific effort
of the company, coordinating science development across the
business, and developing LGC’s scientific partnerships for
research, discovery and innovation. This appointment
significantly strengthens the scientific advice available to the
LGC Board ensuring that LGC continues to be in the forefront of
emerging external scientific and technology trends.

Profile of Derek Craston
Derek Craston joined LGC in 1991 as a leader
of the company’s research and development activities, and has over
15 years’ experience in management within a high tech environment.
In his role as Government Chemist, Derek is responsible for the
work we do as a referee analyst and as advisor to government on
analytical matters relating to regulation and policy. Since he
joined LGC, Derek has held a number of senior positions within the
Group, including Head of Bioanalytical Innovation
and Head of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Services.
As managing director of LGC Science &
Technology division Derek is responsible for the work LGC
undertakes under major contracts for directorates and agencies of
UK Government, including the National Measurement Office (as a UK
National Measurement Institute) and the Medicines and Healthcare
Regulatory Agency. The division also provides programme management
for several Government Departments, and support for the development
and exploitation of new analytical techniques to meet the future
needs of LGC's business.
Derek is a chemist by training with a degree
from the University of St. Andrews and a PhD from Imperial College.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
