19-March-2008 - LGC´s Derek Craston appointed as new Government
Chemist
Dr Derek Craston, LGC’s Head of Pharmaceutical & Chemical
Services, takes over as the Government Chemist from Dr John
Marriott, LGC’s Director of Research & Development
LGC, the international market leader in analytical, forensic and
diagnostic services and reference standards, announces the
appointment of Dr Derek Craston as
the new Government Chemist. The appointment is made by the
Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS). Dr Craston takes over the role
on 1 June 2008 when his predecessor Dr John Marriott will retire as
both the Government Chemist and Director of the Research &
Technology Division at LGC.
The role of the Government
Chemist, discharged on behalf of DIUS, is a State appointment,
agreed under the devolved authorities of Scotland, Wales and
Northern Ireland. The Government Chemist has, since 1842,
discharged the statutory function of referee analyst to resolve
disputes over analytical measurements, particularly in relation to
food regulatory enforcement. The Government Chemist also takes an
active involvement in promoting analytical science and technology,
and provides advice to Government and the wider community on policy
standards, regulation and international comparisons.
Dr Derek Craston said: "I look forward to taking up the post
of Government Chemist and to advising Government and industry on
relevant issues and debates. This will be a great opportunity to
build on the excellent work of my predecessors, to ensure effective
delivery of statutory requirements and to engage with all
stakeholders to assist the development of analytical science for
the benefit of the UK".
