01-Jul-2008 - LGC Forensics participates in Industry
Week at Catalyst
LGC Forensics sets up a mock crime scene for budding young
scientists during Industry Week
LGC Forensics took part in Industry Week on
17-20 June 2008 with a stand at Catalyst, the interactive science
and discovery centre in Runcorn, Cheshire. Industry Week is an
annual event held at Catalyst and aims to help pupils discover the
possible careers in science as well as provide them with a better
understanding of science and the impact in which it can have on
their daily lives.
This year’s event was held and financed by
STEMNET's STEM Support Project which enabled local schools to have
free admission. Around 100 pupils attended each day of the four-day
event, visiting the stands of several science-based companies,
including LGC Forensics.
Many of the stands were interactive and
incorporated activities for students to get involved in. Staff from
LGC Forensics’ Runcorn laboratory presented a mock crime scene,
demonstrating a typical range of evidence types the forensic
investigator is confronted with, including DNA from cigarette ends,
blood, and glass comparison from broken glass.
LGC staff also dressed up in their ‘CSI’ white
boiler suits, attracting an excited audience of pupils who were
fascinated by the different evidence types on display and were keen
to find out more about the role of a forensic scientist in ‘real
life’, compared to those made popular on TV. LGC Forensics staff
talked to pupils about the work they do in the DNA database, crime
scene and drugs teams at Runcorn, as well as about working at LGC.
Teachers were equally interested, with many saying they want to
learn more about forensic science because pupils enjoy the subject
and it engages them during lessons.
