Paternity testing

A unique partnership with a pioneer in the field of genetics and relationship testing ensures that LGC Forensics is at the forefront of paternity testing services in UK and other countries.

Using DNA profiling techniques to identify who is likely to be the biological father of a child, or who is simply related to whom, is a procedure increasingly common in paternity court cases*, criminal investigations and immigration proceedings.

LGC offers these services in co-operation with NorthGene, based at the Institute of Human Genetics in Newcastle upon Tyne. Of the UK’s major relationship companies, NorthGene is the only one that donates any of its profits to medical research and training. At the front line in this field, it offers information, counselling and advice on relationship testing as well as kits for taking samples for DNA analysis.

The analysis itself is then carried out by LGC. LGC has been conducting paternity and relationship tests since 1989 and uses the most accurate genetic testing procedures available. Its paternity testing laboratory in Teddington, Middlesex, is accredited by the Ministry of Justice as a body permitted to carry out parentage tests directed by the civil courts in England and Wales under section 20 of the Family Law Reform Act 1969.

*Please note that all tests directed by the court under section 20 of the Family Law Reform Act 1969 will be solely handled by LGC.

Its services are also used in immigration enquiries and criminal investigations where even the smallest traces of DNA deposit have potentially significance as evidence.
