Innovation

All scientific organisations need continually to innovate to ensure they provide the best services for their customers.

Reflecting this, LGC Forensics pursues a rich programme of research and development. Currently comprising over 70 projects, these include tightly focused projects to bring about small incremental improvements in our techniques and methods, and several, much larger projects for more fundamental advancement.

Examples of recent large projects include the development of:

  • DNA SenCE - for the effective analysis of trace DNA, and a new familial searching tool for use in conjunction with the National DNA Database where results are ranked in order of their likely importance to help direct and prioritise investigations

  • Tape-it and Map-it - new systems for collecting textile fibres and other tiny traces which avoids the risk of contamination and potential compromise to evidence
  • A faster technology for routine identifications of drugs of abuse to cut turnaround times and improve cost effectiveness
  • A custom built, automated platform for analysing DNA in mouth swab samples in connection with the National DNA Database and other reference purposes - to provide substantial, cost effective increase in capacity.
