Nutritional biomarkers
HFL Sport Science has developed a series of breakthrough biomarker
assays to assist health and nutrition programmes in both industry
and academia:
Health
Assays
available for applications relating to various disease states,
including:
- Cancer
- Diabetes
- Heart disease
- Obesity
- Osteoporosis
Efficacy
evaluation
Assays to monitor biomarkers relating
to efficacy within an administration study. Particularly suited for
development of novel nutraceutical
products. Examples include:
- Monitoring of vitamin levels
- Monitoring of carotenoid levels
- Monitoring of phytoestrogen levels (such as
isoflavones and lignans, etc).
Pharmacokinetic
studies
Monitoring pharmacokinetic profiles of
novel nutraceutical ingredients. For example:
- Phytoestrogen levels (isoflavones such as
genistein or daidzein, or metabolites such as equol,
etc).
Epidemiological
studies
Wide range of assays available that can
be used in longitudinal studies relating to long term impact on
health and nutrition. For example:
- Phytoestrogen monitoring: applied to breast
and prostate cancer investigations in the EPIC study,
etc.
Food
diaries
Notoriously inaccurate, food diaries used
during trials may be underpinned by assays which provide accurate
and dependable data using a range of markers including:
- Sucrose/ fructose monitoring
- Vitamin and carotenoid level
monitoring.
Compliance
monitoring
Assays developed to monitor compliance
in clinical trials. A dietary component is administered alongside a
therapeutic preparation and nutritional biomarkers monitored as a
means of ‘tracking’ patient compliance during the study,
including:
- Monitoring of phytoestrogen levels
.
In addition, compliance of dietary regimens
during a clinical trial can also be evaluated, as well as potential
drug-diet interactions. These include:
- Monitoring carotenoid and vitamin levels
- Monitoring phytoestrogen level.
