Occupational Health and Safety
LGC has a longstanding commitment to safeguarding the health and safety of everyone who works for the company. This commitment has been recognised by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) who has awarded LGC its top Gold Medal Award for the last five years. The Directors appreciate their responsibility as employers for safeguarding, as far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety of all their staff.

Senior managers recognise that safe working practices are encouraged by staff involvement. A Safety Committee, chaired by the Chief Executive and involving management, staff and trade union representatives, regularly meets to discuss safety related issues. To further encourage and monitor safety standards, LGC has appointed a Safety Team that uses specialist, professionally qualified advisors from across the company, in areas such as microbiology and radiological protection, as required. This structure is designed to ensure a constant process of implementation, assessment and improvement of safety procedures and policies.

The Company also has a qualified first aid adviser and ten first-aid trained personnel.

LGC complies with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work etc, Act 1974, and all other relevant statutory provisions and provides as far as is reasonably practicable:
  • A safe place of work with proper access
  • Well maintained equipment and systems of work
  • Appropriate and well maintained plant
  • Suitable arrangements for the use, handling, storage and transport of articles and substances
  • Suitable arrangements for providing information, instruction, training and supervision to staff
  • Safe working environments with adequate welfare facilities
  • Guidance to staff in emergency procedures, risk assessments, control measures and information on Health and Safety
  • Effective monitoring and review of safety standards
To ensure the health and safety of all personnel, new staff are required to complete a comprehensive in-house induction program. All new staff are provided with a copy of the safety summary and required to make themselves aware of the requirements described in the Safety Manual. Periodic training courses on safety issues are held to enable staff to meet the requirements of standards and legislation and ensure the continued safety of all personnel within LGC.
