Financial highlights 2000-2001

Last year Group sales increased by over 15% to £26.5m and profit before tax increased by 15% to £1.8m.

Some notable achievements during the year include:

  • The successful completion of the first year of a major contract for the Child Support Agency providing paternity testing services;
  • The award of a ten-year contract by the Medicines Control Agency to establish dedicated laboratory facilities at Teddington;
  • The launch of a partnership to distribute ATCC (American Type Culture Collection) products in Europe. Our collaborative agreement with ATTC will lead to the joint development of new products to enhance the services we offer to research institutes, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies and academia;
  • The expansion of our DNA database laboratory at Teddington, which serves police forces in England and Wales. New DNA laboratories for database and scene-of-crime samples will shortly be opening at Runcorn and Teddington retrospectively;
  • The award of three-year contracts by DTI under which we will be the lead organisation for a programme on chemical and biochemical measurements (the VAM programme);
  • The launch by our subsidiary Pipeline Developments Ltd, of a 'club' programme involving 18 UK water companies to develop standards and protocols for the full range of materials used in pipelines;
  • The award of a major contract to undertake genotyping of sheep as part of the National Scrapie Plan, which aims over time to eradicate the disease from the national flock.
